I moved to SF from Florida (against my will even though I didn’t like Florida either) with an Irish born and raised husband in 1994.
It took me eight years to even halfway like this place.
I felt like I was living life on a different plane of existance. For example– I have been/am sometimes publicly addressed by strangers concerning everything I allowed or disallowed my children to do,say or do such as; not sanitizing my grocery cart before plopping a kid in it ;letting them eat unwashed fruit from time to time;scolding them when they were naughty; letting them be cold if they continue to scream and pull off their coat/hat. These things are simply child abuse in San Francisco it seems. While other things –like not letting them run around buck naked after the age of two, or searching backpacks or rooms for drug paraphenelia or anything else a parent might be concerned about, and insisting they should not attempt to pet strange dogs without the owner’s permission– were seen by San Franciscans as crippling infringement’s on a child’s freedom or rights and likely to do them grave psychological damage.
Getting $100 parking tickets for parking in my own driveway, and whopping tickets for jaywalking on an empty street were other annoyances.
Wish your blog was still going on. Just discovered it and am really enjoying reading.
Thanks for the notes and comments Jenny! And sorry that I’ve been so remiss in keeping the blog updated!! I’ll get back at it… and I’m not sure what infringes on personal freedoms more…strangers critiquing your parenting style or getting a parking ticket in your own driveway! Oh San Francisco!
I frankly don’t get the design. It is kinda trendy to equate the hipsters to the proletariat? Nationalism in other countries is normally frowned upon so think twice before donning your Che hat.
